GFS's Children's Library is housed on-site and is the only library in the local community serving families with young children. With no public libraries within walking distance, the Children's Library offers a welcoming environment that invites families to discover the joys and love of reading. The Library has a collection of more than 8500 Spanish, English, and bilingual books appropriate for children ages 0 to 9. The Children's Library was built in response to a critical challenge affecting the local community. According to the California Standardized Testing Report, a high percentage of children attending schools in the Alum Rock Elementary School District in East San José are not reading at grade level. For many of them, the GFS Children's Library is their first library experience. GFS is especially thrilled about the growing success of our library because 90% of the nearly 800 library card holders report having fewer than ten books in their homes. In keeping with our goal to increase literacy rates among both children and parents, we believe having access to a local library is paramount to keeping a child's interest in reading.
